Flange pipes are rims, collars, or ribs that are used to connect two pipes together by the use of gaskets and bolted connections. The commonly used flanges include weld neck flange, slip-on flange, blind flange, threaded flange, socket weld flange, and lap joint flange. This type of connection between the two pipes allows for ease of disassembling the piping system at the time of repair and maintenance. Flange pipes are usually made of metals that can withstand the pressure created in the piping system. Let’s discuss different types of flange pipes!

    • Weld neck flanges- They are welded onto the end of a pipe to provide a flange that suits high pressure and temperature.
    • Threaded flanges- They have a female thread (internal thread) to fit the threaded pipe into it. It is comparatively easy to fit but not recommended for high pressure and temperatures.
    • Slip-on flanges- They have a pain hole without a shoulder. It has fillet welds on both sides of the pipe.
    • Socket-welded pipe- They have a plain hole with the shoulder on the bottom. The pipe is installed into the hole against the shoulder, and then it is welded into place with a fillet weld outside. This type of flange pipe is used for a small-diameter piping system for low pressure.
    • Reducing flange- It is used to connect between smaller size and larger size pipes without using a reducer. One side has a higher diameter while another side has a quite lower diameter. These flanges are normally available in threaded, blind, slip-on, and weld-neck flanges. They are good alternatives for connecting two different sizes of pipes.

What are the top materials used for manufacturing flanges?

Pipe flanges have to hold weight of the piping system. That’s why they are made of high-quality materials that are sturdy, durable, and withstand pressure, water, moisture, etc. Some of these materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, cast iron, aluminum brass, and PVC. When it comes to its weight, it depends on multiple factors like the size of the flange and material density.
